It’s super easy to plant apple banana on the big island, you will get the best organic taste ever, in this article we will share with you our own experience, how we planted these small banana cuts and how much time it took till we got our first harvest.


First step

On a rainy day, go walk in your land and locate where the rainwater run creating a small river, this will be your perfect location to plant the bananas as the banana plants love water. Also, banana plants need sun exposure, so your task when u want to find the perfect location for your banana plants is a place where water run each time it rains and where the plants get the most exposure of sun every day.

Second step

To plant your banana plants you need mulch, lot of mulch, the transfer station in Hilo every month offers for one day free mulch for everyone, get your trailer, or borrow a trailer, grab this free mulch, and don’t forget to get a bag of fertilizer from Home Depot for banana. Place the mulch dig pots for each plant, place fertilizer in each pot, place your banana plant, cover its edges with mulch. For the root to be activated you need to cut the plant and use the cut to plant it in another place.


Third step

Get from amazon snail bait, sprinkle around your plants this bate, to prevent snail infestation in this region.

Always keep an eye how the plants are going, the color of the leaf will tell you if it need fertilizer or not the greener which mean well fed, yellowish which mean need more fertilizers.

I planted my bananas in 10/10/2020 harvest my first bananas from this project in 3/17/2022 which mean around 17 months, so get ready to be patient in this project, when you harvest your first bananas it will be a wonderful feeling to harvest & eat from your own land.

Fourth step

When your plant grows and carry banana, you need to keep them on it till you see some of the bananas start going yellowish, it’s when you cut the harvest.
